From Portland to Patagonia: Long Road South begins

Last December when I was in Portland visiting family for Christmas, I got to make a really fun video about a couple’s journey.

At the time of the shoot, Seth and Kelly were just starting to plan their trip. It seemed like a wild idea to bike unsupported for that long of a trip, and with Seth on a hand bike. But these two aren’t your average couple.

I shot and edited the video right after a few weeks of intense training with Carl Crum of Brazos Film & Video, so it was quite an experience putting all my training to use.

At the time none of my lenses had Image Stabilization, and I didn’t have any of the great lights and sound equipment that I had at the station, but I made what I had work. I bought compact fluorescents from Home Depot and attached them to the super cheap work light kits.

And best of all, I happened to pick up my brother-in-law Ben from the airport right before I was supposed to start the shoot, so at about an hour’s notice, I got to train Ben to be my second shooter.

Well today, Seth and Kelly are on their way! It’ll be a year-long journey, and you can follow it all at: www.longroadsouth.com
